Dr. Babak Azizzadeh of the CENTER for Advanced Facial Plastic Surgery in Los Angeles is dual board-certified in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and head and neck surgery. He understands both the opportunities and challenges associated with jaw implants and tailors a jaw implant procedure to his patient. In doing so, Dr. Azizzadeh performs a custom jaw implant procedure that maximizes treatment results.
What Are Jaw Implants?
Jaw angle implants can benefit patients who want to boost facial symmetry. They can improve the size and shape of the jaw, so it corresponds to the chin, cheeks, nose, and other facial features.
Patients can undergo jaw implant surgery in combination with other facial rejuvenation procedures as well. In these instances, patients can revitalize the entire facial appearance.
Dr. Azizzadeh requests a patient consultation before he performs jaw implant surgery. The consultation allows Dr. Azizzadeh to review the patient’s medical history and facial features and determine which facial rejuvenation treatments can be used to deliver the optimal results.
If Dr. Azizzadeh recommends jaw implants, he explains the surgery process to his patient and responds to their concerns and questions. He also discusses jaw implant recovery and helps his patient plan accordingly.
What to Expect During Jaw Implant Surgery
It typically requires about one to two hours to perform jaw implant surgery. A patient receives local anesthesia before the procedure is completed.
To insert jaw implants, Dr. Azizzadeh first makes small incisions inside a patient’s mouth. He then places the implants in the jaw and uses dissolvable stitches to close the incisions.
What to Expect During Jaw Implant Recovery
Jaw implant patients may experience mild to moderate discomfort after surgery. Dr. Azizzadeh may prescribe medication to help patients manage pain following a jaw implant procedure. Antibiotics may be required for up to one week following a jaw implant procedure as well.
Bruising and swelling can occur following jaw implant surgery. Bruising usually disappears within about two weeks of surgery, and swelling tends to subside within about three to four weeks.
Patients may require a soft diet for at least one week after they receive jaw implants. Yogurt and other soft foods are generally recommended until postoperative pain disappears.
Most patients can resume their normal activities within about one week of a jaw implant procedure. However, they should avoid exercise and other strenuous activities for at least two weeks after treatment.
Dr. Azizzadeh provides instructions to help patients recover from jaw implant surgery. He also remains available to respond to patients’ concerns and questions following surgery.
