Dr. Babak Azizzadeh, a world-renowned facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, offers the following facelift and neck lift surgery guidelines to help patients plan for pre-op and post-op.

Four Weeks Before & Four Weeks After Surgery

It is important for a patient to prepare for a facelift or neck lift procedure to optimize treatment results. Dr. Babak Azizzadeh, a world-renowned facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, offers the following facelift/neck lift surgery guidelines to help patients plan for pre-op and post-op.
Four Weeks Before & Four Weeks After Surgery
Dr. Azizzadeh requires patients to have a physical with their primary care doctor and some lab work before a facelift and necklift. These will be discussed further at your pre-op appointment.

Facelift and neck lift patients should not undergo any laser or chemical peels at least four weeks prior to and four weeks after surgery. Dr. Azizzadeh will provide clearance for any laser or chemical treatments post-surgery.

Dr. Azizzadeh also recommends patients do not dye their hair for four weeks after facelift or neck lift surgery. However, patients can dye their hair in the weeks leading up to surgery.

Two Weeks Before & Two Weeks After Surgery

Dr. Azizzadeh requests all facelift and neck lift patients avoid the following products in the two weeks prior to and two weeks following surgery:

  • Any products that may interfere with blood clotting including some herbs and dietary supplements.
  • Nicotine products, including cigarettes, cigars, nicotine gum and nicotine patches.
  • Diet pills or supplements.
  • Excess amounts of seafood.

Dr. Azizzadeh asks all facelift and neck lift patients to notify his office of any prescription, over-the-counter and non-prescription drugs that they are currently taking. In addition, Dr. Azizzadeh recommends patients avoid all medications except for those cleared through his office. If alternative medications are necessary, patients should contact a prescribing doctor.

In the two weeks prior to surgery, Dr. Azizzadeh recommends patients purchase hydrogen peroxide, Q-tips and baby shampoo. Furthermore, patients may want to buy Tylenol (acetaminophen) at this time, as Tylenol may be used pre-op and post-op to address pain and/or fever symptoms.

Day & Night Before Surgery

Dr. Azizzadeh offers the following recommendations for facelift and neck lift patients in the final hours before surgery:

  • Avoid consuming any foods or beverages after midnight unless directed to do so by a doctor.
  • Wash the face and shampoo the hair with baby shampoo and gentle soap.
  • Contact a local pharmacy to fill and pick up all post-op prescriptions.

Patients may consume clear liquids up to eight hours prior to surgery. Also, patients can take their everyday asthma, blood pressure, heart and seizure medications with a small amount of water on the morning of their surgery.

All patients should verify their travel arrangements to ensure seamless pre-op and post-op transportation. Patients must have travel arrangements in place before surgery; without travel arrangements, patients will not be allowed to undergo surgery. A travel companion should remain with a patient for at least 24 hours after treatment; patients will not be allowed to leave a surgery center without a travel companion.

The day of a facelift or neck lift surgery can be an exciting yet stressful experience. Fortunately, Dr. Azizzadeh offers the following tips to help ensure a patient’s surgery day plans stay on track:

How to Prepare for Surgery: Tips You Need to Know

There are several things that all patients can do to prepare for a plastic surgery, regardless of procedure. These include:

    • Limit Your Sodium Intake: Avoid salty foods in the days leading up to surgery, as an elevated sodium level can exacerbate swelling following treatment.
    • Stay Active: Walk, run, swim, and engage in other physical activities that promote a healthy lifestyle; these activities can help a patient improve their physical and emotional wellbeing and reduce the risk of post-surgery complications.
    • Notify Family Members and Friends: Let family members and friends about plastic surgery, and they may be willing to help a patient prepare for treatment or provide support during the recovery process.
    • Avoid Alcohol: Do not consume any alcohol for at least 72 hours before surgery; otherwise, alcohol can affect a patient’s immune system and hamper their recovery.

Patients should follow Dr. Azizzadeh’s recommendations to prepare for plastic surgery. In doing so, they can increase the likelihood that their surgery is successful and limit their risk of complications.

How to Prepare Your Body for Plastic Surgery

Along with the aforementioned tips, Dr. Azizzadeh offers recommendations to help patients prepare their body for plastic surgery.

Dr. Azizzadeh recommends patients maintain a balanced diet before plastic surgery. Consuming foods that contain a high volume of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients can help patients speed up their recovery process. It can also help patients lower their risk of infection.

Plastic surgery patients should consume plenty of water in the days before surgery. Typically, a patient should drink approximately six to eight glasses of water daily to stay hydrated and cleanse the body. And, a patient should keep a bottle of water on hand, so he or she can stay hydrated during the recovery process.

The Bottom Line on Preparing for Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery preparation can seem complicated at first. But, with help from Dr. Azizzadeh, a patient can do what’s necessary to put himself or herself in position to undergo a successful treatment.

Ultimately, when it comes to getting ready for a facelift, neck lift, or other types of plastic surgery, there is no reason to leave anything to chance. If patients plan accordingly pre-op and post-op, they can increase the likelihood of achieving their ideal treatment results.
