Episode 20: Your Healthcare Wellness and Prevention Through the Decades

Drs. Babak Azizzadeh and Andrew Schroeder discuss scientifically based preventative measures and treatments that should be considered in living a healthy lifestyle.

Developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be challenging, regardless of age. But, there are many things that people can do to establish a healthy lifestyle that works well for them now and in the future.

In this episode of the Smile podcast, globally recognized facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Babak Azizzadeh discusses science-based health care wellness and prevention with Beverly Hills pulmonologist Dr. C. Andrew Schroeder. The doctors provide tips and recommendations to help people develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What Does It Take to Develop and Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle?

There are several scientifically researched and proven things that people can do to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle. These include:

1. Exercise Regularly

Regular cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercises can make a world of difference relative to physical and emotional wellness. Cardiovascular exercises like running, bicycling, or dancing can be used to slow the heart rate and reduce blood pressure. Meanwhile, weight-bearing exercises like weightlifting, yoga, or hiking can strengthen the muscles and bones.

2. Avoid Tobacco Products

Tobacco products can damage virtually every organ in the body. They can contribute to cancer, heart disease, stroke, and other health problems. However, people who do not consume tobacco products can lower their risk of experiencing these issues.

3. Track Your Weight

Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of high blood pressure, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, and other serious health problems. Yet, people who track their body mass index (BMI) can watch for rapid weight gain. If their BMI exceeds a normal level, they can then take measures to improve their health before they become overweight or obese.

4. Enjoy a Balanced Diet

A balanced diet provides people with the nutrients and calories they need to feel their best. People can establish a balanced diet by regularly consuming foods rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other essential nutrients. They should also stay away from processed foods.

How to Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle in Your 40s and 50s

It can become increasingly difficult for people to maintain a healthy lifestyle as they get older. Fortunately, people in their 20s and 30s who prioritize their health now can take precautions to guard against health problems in their 40s, 50s, and beyond.

For people in their 40s, Dr. Schroeder recommends lab testing at least once a year. Lab tests can help patients in their 40s identify health issues in their early stages.

Furthermore, Dr. Schroeder recommends a colonoscopy for people at age 50. A colonoscopy should be completed at least every 10 years and helps patients in their 50s identify polyps, bowel cancer, and other digestive tract issues.

Find a Health Care Wellness and Prevention Routine That Works for You

The media portrays a wide range of health care wellness and prevention routines, but these routines offer no guarantees. When it comes to health care wellness and prevention, common sense is key.

Those who continuously explore ways to improve their health can develop a wellness routine that consistently meets their expectations. They can also get regular doctor check-ups and take other preventative steps to minimize the risk of severe health problems.

There is no surefire solution to manage health, but help is available. Listen to this episode of the Smile podcast to receive health care wellness and prevention guidance from Dr. Azizzadeh and Dr. Schroeder.
