Dorsal Hump Nose

A dorsal hump refers to a bump on the nasal ridge, also called the “dorsum,” which extends from the bridge to the tip of the nose. It occurs due to excess bone or cartilage — or both — in the nose, causing facial asymmetry. Living with an asymmetrical nose can be difficult, making individuals feel self-conscious about their features. That’s why there’s a specific type of rhinoplasty available that is dedicated to correcting bumps on the bridge of the nose: a dorsal hump nose job. In this procedure, an expert facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon removes, trims, or fills excess bone or cartilage in the nose, leading to a balanced, natural-looking facial appearance.

What Causes a Dorsal Hump Nose?

The cause of a dorsal hump varies. In some instances, an individual experiences nose trauma during birth that results in a bump on the nose bridge. Or, in other cases, a bump develops on its own later in life due to a nose injury. Genetics can also play a role.

Regardless of why a person experiences a hump nose, it is important to note that the condition impacts facial appearance. At the same time, a dorsal hump can be treated via rhinoplasty surgery.

How Does Dorsal Hump Nose Surgery Work?

Like a primary rhinoplasty, dorsal hump nose surgery is a complex procedure, which is why patients should seek out experts like Dr. Babak Azizzadeh of the CENTER for Advanced Facial Plastic Surgery. Dr. Azizzadeh is globally recognized for his expertise in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as head and neck surgery. Before he performs a dorsal hump nose job, Dr. Azizzadeh evaluates the patient’s nose and other facial features. In addition, each dorsal hump procedure must be tailored to the patient to ensure this individual’s nose can safely be corrected. There are three types of dorsal hump nose jobs to consider.

Open Rhinoplasty

In this procedure, also called “external” rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes incisions on the external part of the nose. An open rhinoplasty allows the surgeon full visibility of the anatomical structures that need to be modified or preserved while fixing a bump or imperfection. Open rhinoplasty requires the patient to undergo general anesthesia. Full recovery time for this method can take up to a year, but most patients are back to work and many of their regular activities after two to four weeks.

Despite the incision being made on the outer part of the nose, Dr. Azizzadeh leaves behind minimal signs of the incision, and by following his care plan, patients can heavily minimize scarring.

Closed Rhinoplasty

During a closed rhinoplasty, the surgeon works on repairing the nose or bump by entering through the nostrils. While this method does not leave an outer scar, it can be more difficult for the surgeon to see the nose in its entirety during the procedure. As with an open rhinoplasty, patients will need to undergo general anesthesia for closed rhinoplasty, but the initial recovery time is sometimes shorter than with an open rhinoplasty. Patients can often return to their normal activities one to two weeks after the procedure.

Closed rhinoplasty can be an ideal choice for patients with a small bump on the nose that only needs minor correcting.

Liquid Rhinoplasty

For short-term results that last from six months to two years, patients can consider a liquid dorsal hump rhinoplasty. With a liquid treatment, Dr. Azizzadeh can inject a dermal filler into the nose to even out the appearance of a bump. This procedure is quicker than a surgical rhinoplasty and has a short recovery time. Patients can return to their normal activities the same day. In addition, liquid correction of a nasal bump tends to be less expensive than a surgical nose job. The downside, however, is that liquid rhinoplasty does not deliver permanent results.

Which Rhinoplasty is Right For Me?

When a patient comes into Dr. Azizzadeh’s office seeking dorsal hump nose treatment, he will examine the patient’s nasal structure and evaluate which type of treatment would be best. Dr. Azizzadeh understands an effective dorsal hump treatment depends on the prominence of the patient’s nose and this individual’s nose profile. He also recognizes that a dorsal hump nose surgery patient has facial rejuvenation goals in mind and wants to do everything possible to help the patient achieve these goals.

Therefore, Dr. Azizzadeh crafts a custom surgery treatment plan for his patient. This plan accounts for the patient’s facial appearance and treatment goals, and it enables Dr. Azizzadeh to ensure the patient can achieve the best possible results.

Why Is a Custom Dorsal Hump Nose Job Treatment Plan Required?

Each person’s nose is different. Much in the same way, each dorsal hump on a patient’s nose varies and must be treated accordingly.

Dr. Azizzadeh believes there is no “standard” procedure for dorsal hump nose jobs. Instead, he devotes time and energy to creating a personalized treatment plan for each dorsal hump nose surgery patient. This plan helps minimize the risk of potential complications and boosts the likelihood that the treatment will improve the patient’s facial appearance.

How Much Does Dorsal Hump Rhinoplasty Cost?

Because bumps on the nose are not generally medically necessary to remove, insurance does not typically pay for this type of rhinoplasty. The price varies based on several factors, including what type of procedure the patient receives and what methods are needed to achieve the desired results. Dr. Azizzadeh will consult with patients and lay out the costs, as well as payment options, before the surgery.

Why Do Patients Choose Dr. Azizzadeh for Dorsal Hump Nose Surgery?

Dr. Azizzadeh is a Harvard-trained facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon who is committed to patient success. He possesses dual board certification in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and head and neck surgery and applies his expertise to dorsal hump nose jobs. In doing so, Dr. Azizzadeh helps patients achieve a nose that complements the cheeks, chin, and other facial features and bolsters facial symmetry.
