Rhinoplasty Recovery Process

Rhinoplasty recovery may seem like a time-consuming and difficult process at first, but Dr. Azizzadeh will help patients eliminate the guesswork associated with the nose job recovery process.

While everyone heals differently, in most cases, rhinoplasty recovery may be easier than expected. He and his dedicated staff will provide support throughout each stage of a patient’s nose job recovery, ensuring the patient is able to achieve his or her desired rhinoplasty or revision rhinoplasty results.

In many instances, initial nose surgery recovery requires about seven to 10 days. After this time frame, an individual should be able to return to work or school. Within three to four weeks of rhinoplasty surgery, an individual will be ready to attend special social events, such as a going to college, attending a wedding or high school reunion, etc.

Nose Job Recovery Day-to-Day

The first day of rhinoplasty recovery may prove to be the most challenging. Dr. Azizzadeh will prescribe medication to help a rhinoplasty patient manage his or her pain, and the patient should apply a cold compress to the nose hourly when awake for the first three days after surgery. Following the initial 72 hours after rhinoplasty, pain should significantly subside.

The most common nose surgery recovery symptoms that patients report include:

  • Dull aching
  • Congestion
  • Headaches
  • Swelling
  • Bruising

Furthermore, nose bandages or a nose cast can be removed one week after surgery. At this point, a patient may feel ready to return to his or her everyday activities.

Although a patient can resume normal activities after seven days, it is important to note that he or she will need to limit physical activity for up to four to six weeks after rhinoplasty. Dr. Azizzadeh recommends no heavy exercise or yoga for three weeks after surgery, and no heavy lifting for up to four weeks. You must receive clearance from Dr. Azizzadeh to return to your regular workout routine.

Bruising and Swelling After Rhinoplasty Surgery

Bruising and swelling will occur during rhinoplasty recovery, but the amount of bruising and swelling will vary depending on an individual and the work performed on his or her nose.

Usually, bruising subsides within seven days after rhinoplasty. Dr. Azizzadeh recommends Arnica Forte supplements, which may help an individual control bruising. Arnica Forte can be purchased at the CENTER during your pre-op visit or is available at most pharmacies and does not require a prescription.

Swelling commonly lasts three to four weeks following rhinoplasty. The majority of the swelling will subside within about six weeks of rhinoplasty. At this time, an individual may begin to see the results of his or her rhinoplasty. A patient then will see full results roughly one year after rhinoplasty is completed.

Patience is a virtue, and Dr. Azizzadeh recommends rhinoplasty patients try to remain calm throughout their nose surgery recovery. He will explain the recovery process to a patient and ensure an individual’s concerns and questions are answered before surgery. Plus, Dr. he will review a patient’s nose as part of a consultation, which will enable him to provide an individual with a more precise recovery period estimate.

Rhinoplasty Recovery FAQ

Q: What is the recovery time following a rhinoplasty procedure?

A: The rhinoplasty recovery period varies based on the patient. In most instances, a patient should expect to see the full results of a nose surgery within one to two years of treatment.

Q: What should I expect in the first few weeks after a nose job?

A: Bruising and swelling are common in the initial days following a rhinoplasty. However, these post-rhinoplasty symptoms should subside on their own within about 10 to 14 days of surgery. Swelling may take longer to subside, depending on the individual.

Dr. Azizzadeh recommends a rhinoplasty patient avoid strenuous activities and exercise for at least one month after surgery, too. He may also provide a rhinoplasty patient with other instructions to help him or her make a full recovery.

Q: Can I blow my nose after a rhinoplasty?

A: A patient’s nose will be very delicate in the weeks after a nose surgery, and a patient should be cautious about blowing his or her nose following treatment. After rhinoplasty surgery, blowing the nose may cause bleeding and put a patient at risk of infection. Therefore, a patient should avoid blowing his or her nose for about four weeks after a rhinoplasty.

Q: Will I need to adjust how I sleep after a rhinoplasty?

A: Sleeping on the side or front may displace the bones in the nose following a rhinoplasty, so Dr. Azizzadeh recommends his patients avoid sleeping on his or her side or front for the first few weeks after a nose surgery. Dr. Azizzadeh also recommends a rhinoplasty patient to sleep elevated with two to three extra pillows to try to reduce facial swelling for the first few weeks following surgery.

Q:Will I be able to wear glasses after a rhinoplasty?

A: Glasses can put pressure on the bridge of the nose, and Dr. Azizzadeh requires patients to refrain from wearing glasses and/or sunglasses for six weeks after surgery.

Q: Are follow-up appointments necessary after a rhinoplasty?

A: Yes. Dr. Azizzadeh requests regular follow-up appointments in the weeks and months after a nose surgery to ensure a patient’s recovery stays on track.

Q: What should I expect during a follow-up appointment with Dr. Azizzadeh?

A: Dr. Azizzadeh strives to help a patient enjoy a safe, effective rhinoplasty recovery. To accomplish this goal, he performs patient evaluations during follow-up appointments. Dr. Azizzadeh also uses follow-up appointments to learn about any patient symptoms and address these issues before they escalate.

Q: Will I be able to breathe after a rhinoplasty?

A: Myths persist that it takes a patient several weeks or months to breathe through the nose after rhinoplasty surgery. However, in most instances, a patient can breathe through the nose immediately after nose surgery.

Swelling and bruising are common following a rhinoplasty, but they should not interfere with a patient’s ability to breathe through the nose. If a patient is struggling to breathe through the nose after a rhinoplasty, consult with a doctor immediately.

Q: How long does it take to recover from a rhinoplasty?

A: The rhinoplasty recovery process often takes about six months to complete. Following a nose job, a patient may experience bruising or swelling in the nose and eyes; these symptoms usually last a few days and will disappear on their own.

A nose surgery patient is often asked to avoid strenuous activity for up to six weeks after treatment. Meanwhile, if a nose surgery patient has concerns or questions during the recovery cycle, reaching out to Dr. Azizzadeh may be beneficial.

Dr. Azizzadeh is globally recognized for his facial plastic and reconstructive surgery expertise. He keeps in touch with nose surgery patients throughout the recovery process, ensuring each patient’s recovery stays on track.
