What is a Facelift?
A facelift surgery helps an individual rejuvenate the appearance of the face. Although facelift surgery has become increasingly popular over the years, it is important to note that no two facelift procedures are exactly alike. Much in the same way that the natural aging process affects each person differently, a facelift surgery must be tailored to a person’s facial appearance and facial rejuvenation goals.
Facelift surgery generally is similar for both men and women and great detail is taken to make sure the incision is concealed for patients, especially men who have less hair to hide any incisions. The patient is administered general anesthesia prior to surgery, followed by a small, well-hidden incision along the edge of the ear and into the scalp just a few centimeters.
The surgical incisions will be closed with sutures – some dissolve on their own while others will need to be removed after a few days. Dr. Azizzadeh will provide detailed instructions to ensure a patient can properly take care of the sutures after surgery.
Surgical incisions usually will start to heal three to four weeks after a facelift. At this time, the incision lines from a facelift will be concealed within the hairline and natural contours of the ear and face.
How Does Facelift Surgery Help a Patient Achieve a Balanced, Natural-Looking Facial Appearance?
The goal of facelift surgery is to provide a patient with a balanced, natural-looking facial appearance. To achieve this goal, Dr. Azizzadeh analyzes a patient’s nose, chin, cheeks and other facial features and explores ways to ensure these features are in perfect harmony with one another.
In some instances, a Los Angeles facelift surgeon may perform a standard facelift procedure for every patient. Yet this approach fails to account for a patient’s unique facial features, and it is unlikely to help an individual achieve his or her desired results.
Comparatively, Dr. Azizzadeh understands each Los Angeles facelift patient is different, and the approach he takes for each facelift surgery varies accordingly. Regardless of facelift patient, Dr. Azizzadeh wants each of his patients to achieve a balanced, natural-looking facial appearance – something that can only be accomplished with a personalized approach to facelift surgery.
Dr. Azizzadeh recognizes that Beverly Hills facelift surgery patients have different requests and needs. He also recognizes that all facelift patients strive to achieve balanced, natural-looking facial appearance. Thus, Dr. Azizzadeh requests a patient consultation before he performs facelift surgery so he can analyze an individual and develop a personalized treatment plan for him or her.
First, Dr. Azizzadeh meets with a patient, reviews his or her facial features and learns about this individual’s desired treatment results. He then creates a custom plan designed to help a patient achieve a balanced, natural-looking facial appearance. This plan may include facelift surgery and one or more complementary procedures. At a facelift surgery plan’s conclusion, a patient can enjoy a balanced, natural-looking facial appearance.
Benefits of Facelift Surgery
Facelift surgery is the best way to rejuvenate the overall appearance of the face due to the aging process. It may be used to help a person correct fold lines between the nose and mouth, loose skin and excess fat on the neck, and the loss of youthful contours in the face. Surgery benefits include:
- Enhanced facial contours
- Youthful facial shape
- Repair of loose skin
- Tighter facial muscles
At the CENTER, Los Angeles facelift surgeon Dr. Azizzadeh customizes each facelift surgery to help a patient achieve a balanced and natural-looking facial appearance. Dr. Azizzadeh tailors facelifts with the anti-aging needs of the patient in mind. As a result, Dr. Azizzadeh often utilizes a combination of procedures in conjunction with “traditional” facelift surgery techniques to ensure a patient can achieve the best-possible results.
Am I a Candidate for a Facelift Surgery?
To better help patients understand the aging process and what can be achieved with facial rejuvenation surgery, Dr. Azizzadeh discusses the “Aging Arc.” The Aging Arc defines the aging process in visual terms relative to a patient’s age. In many instances, people in the negative range of the Aging Arc may appear older or younger than they actually are due to cosmetic intervention.
Dr. Azizzadeh works with facelift surgery patients to help them reach the positive range on the Aging Arc. By doing so, Dr. Azizzadeh can ensure that a patient’s facial appearance is radiant and healthy based on his or her chronological age.
Dr. Azizzadeh will use the Aging Arc tool as part of his comprehensive facelift consultation. This consultation serves as a learning opportunity for both Dr. Azizzadeh and a patient and enables an individual to find out where he or she falls on the Aging Arc. Plus, Dr. Azizzadeh will define which facial techniques or type of facelift surgery can be used to help an individual move from the negative range into the positive range of the Aging Arc.
What Can You Do in Your 20's?
Your 20's are not too early to start thinking about the signs of aging! Preventative Botox is becoming increasingly popular with young people in their 20's and 30's.
Though most people will not show very many signs of aging in their 20's, the first indicators usually begin as shallow lines on the forehead.
Most of us spend way too much time squinting at a screen, and that goes for young people as well! This eye strain can cause premature outer-eye wrinkles, or crow's feet.
As you approach middle age, you may notice that your upper and lower eyelids are less firm and begin to sag more, adding to the effect of crow's feet.
Sagging jowls, or a sagging jawline, is the result of gravity over time. As the face ages and you lose volume in your cheeks, everything is drawn downward. This is an issue that can be addressed with facial fillers or surgery!
Lips Lose Volume
Lips tend to lose their firmness and volume with age, and facial fillers can help to restore them to their youthful appearance!
What Can You Do in Your 40's?
At this stage in life, you may be unhappy with your visible signs of aging, but not quite ready to commit to surgical solutions. There are a wide variety of facial fillers available that can address wrinkles and help increase facial fullness!
What Can I Do in My 60's?
Fortunately, a facelift is the perfect solution for older men and women looking to rejuvenate their appearance!
It is common for both women and men in their 60's to experience a droop in the tips of their noses. Rhinoplasty can be an excellent fix for this issue.
Loss of Elasticity
Throughout the aging process, skin loses essential collagen, and therefore begins to sag and become less supple.

What Parts of the Face Does a Facelift Address?
Common signs of aging addressed during a facelift procedure include:
- Loss of tone in the face and neck
- Loss of skin elasticity
- Loss of chin and neck contours
- Creases between the corners of the mouth and base of the nose (smile lines or nasolabial folds)
Dr. Azizzadeh takes a holistic approach to facelift surgery. He views the face as a continuum. As such, even a minor change to one portion of the face can have far-flung effects on all other parts of the face.
Facelifts help a patient correct many common signs of aging in different areas of the face, such as:
- Cheeks: Reduces sagging of the cheeks that often results in an aged and tired appearance.
- Jawline: Removes excess skin on the lower jawline.
- Nose: Improves the appearance of a drooping nasal tip.
- Neck: Eliminates excess fat and sagging skin in the neck.
- Eyes: Addresses drooping skin or hollows around the eyes.
Although a facelift may seem like an all-in-one procedure to address all visible signs of aging in the face, Dr. Azizzadeh sometimes recommends specific surgeries to address various portions of the face. These surgeries include:
- Mid Facelift: Enhances the appearance of the lower eyelids and cheeks.
- Brow Lift: Lifts sagging skin from the forehead.
- Neck Lift: Address loose neck skin, excess fat and other visible signs of aging from the neck and jawline.
- Eyelid Lift: Removes bags from the lower eyelids and excess skin from the upper eyelids.
The aforementioned procedures may be performed on their own or in conjunction with a facelift surgery. To determine which procedure can help a patient achieve his or her desired facial rejuvenation results, Dr. Azizzadeh requests a patient consultation.
During a consultation, Dr. Azizzadeh finds out why a patient is considering a facial rejuvenation treatment. He learns about a patient and his or her medical history. Dr. Azizzadeh also uses the Aging Arc tool to get a better idea about how different surgical procedures may affect a patient’s facial appearance.
Dr. Azizzadeh strives to help a patient achieve a natural-looking and beautiful facial appearance. He wants to ensure any procedure delivers facial harmony, and to accomplish this goal, develops a personalized treatment plan for each patient.
A facelift helps patients revitalize his or her facial appearance. Dr. Azizzadeh outlines all stages of a surgery, as well as helps a patient set realistic expectations for the facelift recovery process.
In some instances, Dr. Azizzadeh may recommend a facelift procedure in combination with one or more other surgeries when multiple facial rejuvenation procedures will help a patient enhance his or her facial appearance. Furthermore, he provides insights into how these procedures will help a patient accomplish his or her facial rejuvenation treatment goals.
When it comes to facelifts and other facial rejuvenation surgeries, Dr. Azizzadeh wants to help a patient feel good about his or her decision. Therefore, Dr. Azizzadeh works with a patient and does whatever he can to educate him or her about different treatment options. He also provides comprehensive support throughout the treatment and recovery processes to ensure a patient can achieve the best-possible surgery results.

What Does the Facelift Recovery Process Include?
The facelift recovery process may require several weeks to complete, and it often varies based on the patient. Patients may experience any of the following symptoms during this period:
- Bruising that lasts one to two weeks.
- Swelling that lasts one to three weeks.
- Secondary healing that occurs after initial swelling dissipates and may take up to six months to complete.
- Ear numbness that lasts about eight weeks.
- Tightness in the face that lasts six to eight weeks.
- Smile or facial muscle weakness in the first two days.
- Return to work and everyday activities within 10 to 14 days.
- Return to a regular exercise routine after about three weeks.
- For most patients, pain is limited. Some patients may require pain medications in the first 72 hours after facelift surgery; thereafter, extra strength Tylenol can be used.
- If you have excruciating pain, please call your surgeon. Avoid the following for 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks after surgery – Aspirin, Advil, non-steroidal pain medications, fish, herbal supplements, vitamins, smoking, all nicotine products, marijuana, illicit drugs.
- Use cold compresses in the first 72 hours after surgery (20 minutes per hour when awake) then switch to warm compresses (20 minutes, 3 times per day) thereafter over the areas of bruising.
- Gently clean incisions with hydrogen peroxide once a day for the first 7 days.
- Apply antibiotic ointment 3 times a day over all incisions.
- All stitches will be removed within six to eight days of facelift surgery.
- Wear head wrap garment as much as possible for the first week after surgery. If irritation occurs, remove the head wrap and call our office. It is important that you prevent the bandage from rolling up or wrinkling under your chin. Continue wearing head wrap as much as possible when at home and at night for 3 weeks after facial surgery.
- Keep head elevated for at least 1 – 2 weeks following your facial surgery. This includes while you sleep, rest or relax.
- You may remove compression garment to shower starting 2 days after surgery.
Dr. Azizzadeh will provide extensive details about facelift aftercare prior to surgery. If you have additional aftercare questions during the recovery period, please reach out to Dr. Azizzadeh for additional support.
Oftentimes, individuals between the ages of 40 and 60 years old undergo facelift surgery to correct wrinkles, frown lines and other visible signs of aging in the face. However, facelift surgery is sometimes performed on patients in their 70s and 80s as well.
Dr. Azizzadeh performs a patient evaluation to determine if an individual is eligible for facelift surgery, regardless of age. He generally offers facelift surgery to a patient if he believes it can be performed safely and will help him or her achieve a balanced, natural-looking facial appearance.
Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed solution to slow down the natural aging process. But a facelift helps minimize signs of aging in the face. In fact, the procedure enables a patient to revitalize his or her facial appearance.
Although a facelift tightens the facial skin, in the hands of an expert facelift surgeon, like Dr. Azizzadeh, it won’t cause the face to appear tight. Instead, a facelift helps a patient achieve a natural facial appearance in which the eyes, cheeks, chin and other facial features appear in perfect harmony.
A traditional facelift does not address the upper portion of the face, i.e. the forehead and around the eyes. But with Dr. Azizzadeh’s comprehensive facial rejuvenation approach, he will incorporate procedures to treat these areas, if they are of concern to the patient.
A patient does not need to have their entire head shaved before a facelift. Instead, a small portion of hair may need to be removed from behind the hairline before a facelift; this is where the surgical incisions are placed.
It usually takes about three to four hours to complete a facelift surgery. Additional time may be required depending on the extent of facelift surgery and if a procedure is conducted in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation treatments.
There is no way to tell exactly how much younger a patient will look after a facelift surgery. The results of a facelift procedure are predicated on the treatment itself, along with the patient’s recovery. If a patient follows the aftercare instructions provided by Dr. Azizzadeh, he or she can boost the likelihood of achieving the full results of their facelift. Plus, this patient is well-equipped to enjoy these results for years to come.
Numbness in the cheeks and neck is common after facelift surgery, but it usually disappears within a few months of treatment.
Dr. Azizzadeh makes facelift surgery incisions above the hairline, at the temple. This helps hide the incisions behind the hairline.
As a patient heals after a facelift, their surgical scars will soften and mature. Within a few months of a facelift, a patient’s scars will be virtually invisible.
Dr. Azizzadeh has a simple goal for facelift surgery: to ensure the procedure helps a patient achieve a natural-looking facial appearance. Thus, friends and family members probably won’t be able to tell if a person has undergone a facelift procedure, as treatment results will appear natural.
Many non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures are available, but they do not offer the long-term results of a facelift procedure. For patients who want to undergo a facial rejuvenation procedure that provides permanent results, facelift surgery is usually ideal.
It can be difficult to decide between surgical and non-surgical facial rejuvenation, but Dr. Azizzadeh can help. By meeting with Dr. Azizzadeh, a patient can learn about both types of facial rejuvenation procedures and decide which one aligns with their treatment goals.
It usually helps to learn about all aspects of facelift surgery to determine if the procedure can help an individual accomplish his or her desired facial rejuvenation results. To do so, a patient should schedule a consultation with Dr. Azizzadeh.
Dr. Azizzadeh takes the guesswork out of facelift surgery. He explains facelift surgery to his patients and responds to their concerns and questions. Dr. Azizzadeh also offers facelift insights that a patient may struggle to obtain elsewhere.
If a patient decides to undergo facelift surgery, Dr. Azizzadeh crafts a custom treatment plan for him or her. Dr. Azizzadeh helps a facelift patient establish realistic expectations for surgery, too. That way, a patient can plan ahead for all stages of facelift surgery.
Facelifting is popular, and Dr. Azizzadeh is at the forefront of the evolving facial plastic and reconstructive surgery sector. Dr. Azizzadeh stays up to date on the latest facelift procedures.
