What is a Facelift?
A facelift surgery helps an individual rejuvenate the appearance of the face. Although facelift surgery has become increasingly popular over the years, it is important to note that no two facelift procedures are exactly alike. Much in the same way that the natural aging process affects each person differently, a facelift surgery must be tailored to a person’s facial appearance and facial rejuvenation goals.
Facelift surgery generally is similar for both men and women and great detail is taken to make sure the incision is concealed for patients, especially men who have less hair to hide any incisions. The patient is administered general anesthesia prior to surgery, followed by a small, well-hidden incision along the edge of the ear and into the scalp just a few centimeters.
The surgical incisions will be closed with sutures – some dissolve on their own while others will need to be removed after a few days. Dr. Azizzadeh will provide detailed instructions to ensure a patient can properly take care of the sutures after surgery.
Surgical incisions usually will start to heal three to four weeks after a facelift. At this time, the incision lines from a facelift will be concealed within the hairline and natural contours of the ear and face.
Benefits of Facelift Surgery
Facelift surgery is the best way to rejuvenate the overall appearance of the face due to the aging process. It may be used to help a person correct fold lines between the nose and mouth, loose skin and excess fat on the neck, and the loss of youthful contours in the face. Surgery benefits include:
- Enhanced facial contours
- Youthful facial shape
- Repair of loose skin
- Tighter facial muscles
At the CENTER, Dr. Azizzadeh customizes each facelift surgery to help a patient achieve a balanced and natural-looking facial appearance. Dr. Azizzadeh tailors facelifts with the anti-aging needs of the patient in mind. As a result, Dr. Azizzadeh often utilizes a combination of procedures in conjunction with “traditional” facelift surgery techniques to ensure a patient can achieve the best-possible results.
Am I a Candidate for a Facelift Surgery?
To better help patients understand the aging process and what can be achieved with facial rejuvenation surgery, Dr. Azizzadeh discusses the “Aging Arc.” The Aging Arc defines the aging process in visual terms relative to a patient’s age. In many instances, people in the negative range of the Aging Arc may appear older or younger than they actually are due to cosmetic intervention.
Dr. Azizzadeh works with facelift surgery patients to help them reach the positive range on the Aging Arc. By doing so, Dr. Azizzadeh can ensure that a patient’s facial appearance is radiant and healthy based on his or her chronological age.
Dr. Azizzadeh will use the Aging Arc tool as part of his comprehensive facelift consultation. This consultation serves as a learning opportunity for both Dr. Azizzadeh and a patient and enables an individual to find out where he or she falls on the Aging Arc. Plus, Dr. Azizzadeh will define which facial techniques or type of facelift surgery can be used to help an individual move from the negative range into the positive range.
Furthermore, an individual who displays any of the following signs of aging may prove to be a viable candidate for facelift surgery:
- Loose skin
- Volume loss
- Noticeable facial expression lines
- Loss of collagen and/or skin elasticity
- Asymmetrical facial appearance due to aging
Dr. Azizzadeh takes a holistic approach to facelift surgery and will help a patient identify the underlying aging issues in the face. Then, he will offer a precise treatment that ensures complete facial rejuvenation./p>
What Parts of the Face Does a Facelift Address?
Common signs of aging addressed during a facelift procedure include:
- Loss of tone in the face and neck
- Loss of skin elasticity
- Loss of chin and neck contours
- Creases between the corners of the mouth and base of the nose (smile lines or nasolabial folds)
Dr. Azizzadeh takes a holistic approach to facelift surgery. He views the face as a continuum. As such, even a minor change to one portion of the face can have far-flung effects on all other parts of the face.
Facelifts help a patient correct many common signs of aging in different areas of the face, such as:
- Cheeks: Reduces sagging of the cheeks that often results in an aged and tired appearance.
- Jawline: Removes excess skin on the lower jawline.
- Nose: Improves the appearance of a drooping nasal tip.
- Neck: Eliminates excess fat and sagging skin in the neck.
- Eyes: Addresses drooping skin or hollows around the eyes.
Although a facelift may seem like an all-in-one procedure to address all visible signs of aging in the face, Dr. Azizzadeh sometimes recommends specific surgeries to address various portions of the face. These surgeries include:
- Mid Facelift: Enhances the appearance of the lower eyelids and cheeks.
- Brow Lift: Lifts sagging skin from the forehead.
- Neck Lift: Address loose neck skin, excess fat and other visible signs of aging from the neck and jawline.
- Eyelid Lift: Removes bags from the lower eyelids and excess skin from the upper eyelids.
The aforementioned procedures may be performed on their own or in conjunction with a facelift surgery. To determine which procedure can help a patient achieve his or her desired facial rejuvenation results, Dr. Azizzadeh requests a patient consultation.
During a consultation, Dr. Azizzadeh finds out why a patient is considering a facial rejuvenation treatment. He learns about a patient and his or her medical history. Dr. Azizzadeh also uses the Aging Arc tool to get a better idea about how different surgical procedures may affect a patient’s facial appearance.
Dr. Azizzadeh strives to help a patient achieve a natural-looking and beautiful facial appearance. He wants to ensure any procedure delivers facial harmony, and to accomplish this goal, develops a personalized treatment plan for each patient.
A facelift helps patients revitalize his or her facial appearance. Dr. Azizzadeh outlines all stages of a surgery, as well as helps a patient set realistic expectations for the facelift recovery process.
In some instances, Dr. Azizzadeh may recommend a facelift procedure in combination with one or more other surgeries when multiple facial rejuvenation procedures will help a patient enhance his or her facial appearance. Furthermore, he provides insights into how these procedures will help a patient accomplish his or her facial rejuvenation treatment goals.
When it comes to facelifts and other facial rejuvenation surgeries, Dr. Azizzadeh wants to help a patient feel good about his or her decision. Therefore, Dr. Azizzadeh works with a patient and does whatever he can to educate him or her about different treatment options. He also provides comprehensive support throughout the treatment and recovery processes to ensure a patient can achieve the best-possible surgery results.

Dr. Azizzadeh is happy to outline the benefits of the many non-surgical options to patients. And if an individual has concerns or questions about these treatment options, Dr. Azizzadeh will address his or her queries immediately.
What Other Surgical Procedures Are Available to Address the Face?
A facelift procedure alone may prove to be worthwhile for some individuals. However, in many cases, additional complimentary surgical procedures may be needed to ensure a patient can achieve a natural and balanced outcome.
Dr. Azizzadeh listens to each of his patients, and as such, will work with a patient to determine which treatment options are best for the individual. He will allocate the necessary time and resources to learn about a patient and find out why this individual is considering facelift surgery. Also, Dr. Azizzadeh may recommend facelift surgery be performed in conjunction with any of the following procedures:
- Neck lift
- Fat grafting
- Brow lift
- Upper and lower blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
- Chin augmentation
- Submental liposuction
- Laser resurfacing
