Submental fullness, more commonly referred to as a double chin, can detract from an otherwise balanced facial appearance, as it can make you look older or heavier. In this era of selfies and facetime, many people are much more conscious of the appearance of a double chin. While submental liposuction for fat under the chin and along the upper portion of the neck can improve your appearance, Dr. Azizzadeh is now offering an innovative non-invasive treatment – Kybella™ – to melt away your double chin.
FDA approved, Kybella™ is a shot that dissolves fat under the chin. It is a safe and effective way to get rid of a double chin without surgery. Dr. Azizzadeh is among the first to offer Kybella™ treatments. As a leading facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Azizzadeh specializes in providing his patients with the newest and most effective anti-aging and aesthetic treatments available. What is Kybella™?
Kybella™ is a formulation of deoxycholic acid, which is a substance that your body naturally produces to absorb fat. When Kybella™ is injected into subcutaneous fat (fat deposits), it destroys the fat cells’ membranes, causing them to burst. Once the fat cells have been destroyed, they can no longer store or accumulate fat, and what remains of the fat cells are flushed out the body. Therefore, Kybella™ injections permanently get rid of the fat cells in the chin.
As every patient is unique, Dr. Azizzadeh will work with you to create a customized Kybella™ treatment plan. Many patients see visible improvements after just two to four treatments, spaced at least one month apart. Patients may have up to six treatments of Kybella™. The amount of Kybella™ injected during each treatment will be dependent upon how much fat needs to be dissolved. After examining you at your consultation, Dr. Azizzadeh will determine how many Kybella™ treatments you need to provide you with the best results possible.
Who is a candidate for Kybella™ injections?
The chin and neck frame the face and play a very important role in an individual’s overall appearance. Extra submental fat can therefore create an aged or over-weight appearance. Fat can accumulate around the chin and neck for a variety of reasons, including aging, genetics and weight gain.
Aging is a very common cause of submental fullness. With age we see an accumulation of fat, laxity of the platysma muscle and ptosis of the underlying anatomy, which all lead to the appearance of a double chin.
Genetics can predispose an individual to the development of submental fullness. We often see younger patients with extensive fat deposits and a recessed chin, which are purely a result of genetics. With age, their double chin becomes more and more pronounced.
Weight gain may also contribute to the onset of a double chin. Moderate-to-drastic weight gain can increase the prominence of the submental fat pad.
After examining your submental fullness and listening to your aesthetic treatment goals, Dr. Azizzadeh will work with you to create a customized treatment plan to help you improve your chin profile.
In the past, the only treatment for an unwanted double chin was chin liposuction or a neck lift. Today, Dr. Azizzadeh is excited to offer non-surgical Kybella™ injections to get rid of a double chin. While the amount of injections varies from patient to patient, depending on their needs, the treatment itself is very quick and is very comparable to Botox or filler injections. You can even return to work or your daily activities immediately after the Kybella™ treatment. Since patients need multiple Kybella™ treatments, it will take approximately three to four months to see the final results of your treatment.
As with most cosmetic injectable treatments, you may experience some swelling and tenderness for a few days after the Kybella™ treatment. The use of painkillers and ice will help to reduce these mild side effects. Taking Arnica can also help reduce bruising and swelling after your Kybella™ treatments.
For true non-surgical facial rejuvenation addressing skin laxity, fat accumulation and volume loss, Dr. Azizzadeh has created Kytherma– the combination of Kybella™, Ulthera and Voluma treatments. On their own, each of these three non-invasive cosmetic treatments provide great results, but when combined all together, the results are truly the best that non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments have to offer.
Kybella™ injections melt away your double chin, creating a more youthful jawline and neck.
Ulthera is an ultrasound technology that stimulates the SMAS (facial muscles) to lift and tighten loose, sagging skin. It can be used to lift the brows, correct jowls or a sagging jawline, and tighten a loose turkey neck.
Voluma is a facial filler that instantly restores volume to the face. It can be injected to the mid-face (cheeks) and/or lower face (chin and jawline) to provide you contour and a subtle lift.
If you are a candidate for Kytherma, Dr. Azizzadeh will first recommend you undergo Kybella™ injections. Once your Kybella™ treatments are completed (on average, two to four Kybella™ treatments will be necessary), then you will have an in-office Ultherapy treatment followed by the Voluma injections.
The goal of Kytherma is to provide patients with a non-surgical face and neck lift alternative. A good candidate for Kytherma is a patient with mild skin laxity, excess fat under the chin, and volume loss. Although the overall results of Kytherma are not permanent, they are long lasting and are a great way to delay the need for surgical intervention. Dr. Azizzadeh prides himself in offering his patients the most innovative and non-invasive facial rejuvenation treatments available, and is excited to offer Kytherma.
Is Kybella™ Safe?
When Kybella™ injections are performed by an experienced facial plastic surgeon, like Dr. Azizzadeh, the treatment is very safe. However, if injected improperly, Kybella™ can destroy other types of cells, such as skin cells. For this reason, it is very important to seek treatment for a double chin from a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, like Dr. Azizzadeh. With years of experience and a profound knowledge of the anatomy and aesthetics of the face and neck, patients can trust they are truly in the best hands when having Kybella™ injections with Dr. Azizzadeh.
Kybella™ is the first FDA approved treatment for adults with moderate-to-severe fat below the chin. The safety and effectiveness of Kybella™ was established in two clinical trials.
Kybella Treatment FAQs
How is Kybella administered?
During a Kybella procedure, Dr. Azizzadeh administers small injections under a patient’s chin. The treatment takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete, and the exact number of injections a patient receives varies based on the amount of fat under the chin and his or her desired profile.
How many Kybella sessions do I need to complete to achieve the best-possible treatment results?
Each patient’s chin profile is different, and as such, the number of Kybella sessions needed to achieve the best-possible treatment results varies from patient to patient. Most patients need two to four Kybella treatments to see the best results.
Dr. Azizzadeh helps patients determine how many Kybella sessions are necessary. He evaluates the amount and distribution of a patient’s submental fat and his or her treatment goals. Then, Dr. Azizzadeh offers personalized Kybella treatment recommendations.
How frequently are Kybella sessions completed?
Each Kybella treatment is administered at least one month apart. Furthermore, a patient should not receive more than six treatments.
Can anyone receive Kybella injections?
Dr. Azizzadeh performs an in-depth patient evaluation to determine if an individual is eligible for Kybella injections. This evaluation enables Dr. Azizzadeh to learn about a patient and his or her facial rejuvenation goals and craft a personalized Kybella treatment program.
Although Kybella has been shown to deliver safe, effective results for many patients, Kybella injections are not intended for everyone. If a patient is pregnant or plans to become pregnant, is breastfeeding or plans to breastfeed or is taking certain types of medications, Dr. Azizzadeh may recommend Kybella alternatives for facial rejuvenation.
A patient should notify Dr. Azizzadeh about any medical conditions prior to treatment. This helps Dr. Azizzadeh determine if a patient is a viable candidate for Kybella injections. Additionally, Dr. Azizzadeh provides full details about how a patient should prepare for a Kybella treatment.
What are the side effects associated with Kybella treatments?
Common side effects associated with Kybella include swelling, numbness and redness in the treatment area. In very rare cases, Kybella patients also experience nerve injuries in the jaw, trouble swallowing or bruising, hair loss, open sores and cell-death around the injection site; this can happen with an inexperienced physician.
Dr. Azizzadeh is a globally recognized facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon who is dedicated to helping patients reap the benefits of Kybella. He takes a holistic approach to Kybella treatments, and by doing so, does everything possible to minimize risk. Plus, Dr. Azizzadeh allocates time and resources to teach patients about Kybella and respond to their treatment concerns or questions. He ensures each patient understands what to expect during a Kybella treatment. By doing so, Dr. Azizzadeh strives to help each patient feel confident about his or her Kybella treatment program.
