Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation, also known as mentoplasty, involves the placement of a small implant in the front of the chin bone. With an implant in place, an individual can increase and enhance the length of his or her jawline.

Types of Chin Augmentations

There are two types of mentoplasty:

  • Reduction: Involves the removal of excess chin bone or moving the jaw bone to alter the shape of the face. Generally to make the overall facial appearance softer.
  • Augmentation: Usually involves a surgical implant; however, the jaw also can be moved into place as part of an augmentation procedure. Generally performed to improve an weak chin.

A facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, like Dr. Babak Azizzadeh may recommend a chin reduction if the chin is too prominent. In this scenario, the surgeon will shave and shape the mandible, or lower jawbone, to help an individual get the best results possible.

Chin reductions may be performed in two ways:

  • Direct Reduction: Excess bone is removed from the chin with a burr.
  • Sliding Genioplasty: Excess bone is cut, moved backward and held in place with metal screws.

If the chin is out of proportion relative to other facial features, Dr. Azizzadeh may recommend chin augmentation to enhance the size of the chin. This chin surgery generally involves the use of implants that consist of autologous bone collected from an individual's pelvis or rib. Or, the implant may consist of synthetic materials. A sliding genioplasty also may be completed in conjunction with chin augmentation. During a consultation with Dr. Azizzadeh, he will discuss the different options in greater detail and determine which type of implant is best for the patient.

In addition, chin augmentation may be performed in combination with rhinoplasty or lip augmentation. It is important to remember that the face should not be looked at just by singular areas. The face always needs to be looked at as a whole, as all of the different facial features work together to make the overall appearance. As a world-renowned facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Azizzadeh always takes a holistic approach to surgery and makes sure that any procedures performed create results that are in balance with the whole face. Together, the chin, lips and nose chin augmentation and rhinoplasty or lip augmentation may enable a person to optimize his or her cosmetic treatment results.

Further, Dr. Azizzadeh will discuss the pros and cons associated with chin reduction and chin augmentation with a patient and will answer a patient's chin surgery concerns before treatment.

Different Types of Chin Procedures

There are several types of chin procedures, including:

  • Chin Enlargement: Leverages chin implants to supplement the existing bone at the front of the jaw between the teeth.
  • Chin Reconstruction: Allows a person to repair a broken, dislocated or fractured jaw.
  • Chin Liposuction: Enables an individual to remove fat from the chin (submental fat under the chin), resulting in an improved jawline and enhanced facial proportions.

Are You a Candidate for Chin Surgery?

The ideal candidates for chin surgery may display the following facial features:

  • Fleshy neck
  • Pointed or squared chin
  • Prominent nose
  • Recessed chin
  • Weak chin
  • Double chin

A mentoplasty candidate must be in good health for chin surgery. As such, a facial plastic and reconstructive chin surgeon like Dr. Azizzadeh will learn about an individual's medical history during an initial consultation. If chin surgery proves to be too risky for an individual, the surgeon and patient will be able to explore alternative treatment options.
